齊景公曰:“和與同異乎?”晏子對曰:“異!和如羹焉,水火醯醢鹽梅,以烹魚肉,燀之以薪,宰夫和之,齊之以味,濟其不及,以泄其過。……君臣亦然。君所謂可,而有否焉,臣獻其否,以成其可;君所謂否,而有可焉,臣獻其可,以去其否。……聲亦如味,一氣、二體、三類、四物、五聲、六律、七音、八風、九歌以相成也,清濁、大小、短長、疾徐、哀樂、剛柔、遲速、高下、出入周疏以相濟也。……若以水濟水,誰能食之?若琴瑟之專壹,誰能聽之?同之不可也如是!”按《國語·鄭語》史伯對鄭桓公曰:“夫和實生物,同則不繼。以他平他謂之和,故能豐長而物歸之;若以同裨同,盡乃棄矣。……聲一無聽,物一無文,味一無果,物一無講。”《論語·子路》章“君子和而不同”句,劉寶楠《正義》引《左傳》、《國語》之文釋之,當矣。《管子·宙合》篇論君臣之道如“五音不同聲而能調,五味不同物而能和”,已蘊晏、史之旨。史不言“彼平此”、“異物相平”,而曰“他平他”,立言深契思辨之理。《孔叢子·抗志》篇:“衛君言計是非,而羣臣和者如出一口。子思曰:……自是而臧之,猶卻眾謀,況和非以長乎?”子思之“和”,正晏、史之“同”也。《淮南子·說山訓》:“事固有相待而成者:兩人俱溺,不能相拯,一人處陸則可矣。故同不可相治,必待異而後成”;高誘註全本晏子語。晏、史言“和”猶《樂記》云:“禮者,殊事合敬者也,樂者,異文合愛者也”;“殊”“異”而“合”,即“待異而後成”。古希臘哲人道此,亦喻謂音樂之和諧,乃五聲七音之輔濟,而非單調同聲之專壹。赫拉克利都斯反復言,無高下相反之音則樂不能和(There could be no attunement without the opposites high and low),故同必至不和而諧出於不一(what agrees disagrees, the concordant is discordant)。柏拉圖嘗引其語而發揮之,並取譬於愛情(原文略)。蘇格拉底嘗謂國家愈統一愈佳,亞理士多德駁之曰:苟然,則國家將成個人,如和諧之斂為獨音、節奏之約為么拍(like harmony passing into unison, or rhythm which has been reduced to a single foot)。文藝復興時最喜闡發相反相成之理(la coincidenza de contrarii)者,所見當推布魯諾(Bruno),謂專壹則無和諧(原文略);近世美學家亦論一致非即單調(Eintracht, uicht Einklang)。其旨胥歸乎“和而不同”而已。晏子別“和”於“同”,古希臘詩人謂爭(strife)有二,一善而一惡,前者互利,後者交殘;“善爭”與“和”亦騎驛可通者。 “飲酒樂。公曰:‘古而無死,其樂若何!’晏子對曰:‘古而無死,則古之樂也,君何得焉?……古若無死,爽鳩氏之樂,非君所願也!’”按《全唐文》卷二六一李邕《諫鄭普思以方技得幸疏》云:“陛下今若以普思有奇術,可致長生久視之道,則爽鳩氏久應得之,永有天下,非陛下今日可得而求”,下文復言仙方則秦皇、漢武永有天下,佛法則漢明、梁武永有天下,即本《左傳》此文而鋪演者。
********增訂 孟德斯鳩嘗論亞洲之專制一統(l'accord du despotisme asiatique)不足為訓,政體當如音樂,能使相異者協,相反者調,歸於和諧(原文略)。正晏子所言“和”非即“同”也。
