    錢鍾書先生-《管錐編》左傳正義54昭公十八年

         “往者見周原伯魯焉,與之語,不說學。……閔子馬曰:‘周其亂乎!夫必多有是說,而後及其大人;大人患失而惑,又曰:可以無學,無學不害’”;《註》:“患有學而失道者,以惑其意”;《正義》:“大人患其國內有多學而失其道者,而疑惑於此言,謂此言有道理也。”按孔疏誤甚。“惑”承“失”來,非謂大人為此言所惑,乃謂大人患民有學則失正道而生惑亂,如《史記·秦始皇本紀》李斯所謂:“不師今而學古,惑亂黔首。”愚民之說,已著於此。《老子》六五章:“古之善為道者,非以明民,將以愚之,民之難治,以其智多”,故《河南二程遺書》卷二五云:“秦之愚黔首,其術蓋出於老子”;實則原伯魯輩主張無以大異。《論語·泰伯》:“民可使由之,不可使知之”,鄭玄註引《春秋繁露》“民、暝也”為釋(參觀《全後漢文》卷四六崔寔《政論》:“人[民]之為言暝也”)《莊子·胠篋》:“絕聖棄智,大盜乃止”;《商君書》尤反復丁寧,如《墾令》:“民不貴學則愚”,《壹言》:“塞而不開則民渾。”蓋斯論早流行於周末,至始皇君臣乃布之方策耳。《孫子·九地》:“將軍之事,靜以幽,正以治,能愚士卒之耳目,使之無知”;然則愚民者,一言以蔽之,治民如治軍,亦使由而不使知也。文章學問復可為愚民之具。“明”即是“暝”,見即為蔽,則原伯魯、李斯之所未窺,宋晁說之始致慨焉。《嵩山文集》卷一三《儒言》:“秦焚《詩》、《書》,坑學士,欲愚其民,自謂其術善矣。蓋後世又有善焉者。其於《詩》、《書》則自為一說,以授學者,觀其向背而寵辱之,因以尊其所能而增其氣焰,因其黨與而世其名位,使才者顓而拙、智者固而愚矣”;蓋為王安石“新學”而發(參觀卷一《元符三年應詔言事》斥《三經義》“塗人耳目,窒人聰明”)。陳允衡《詩慰·萬茂先詩選·丙子述懷》:“笑殺坑儒癡獨絕,不將文字作長平!”;顧炎武《日知錄》卷一六《擬題》:“八股之害,等於焚書,而敗壞人才,有甚於咸陽之郊所坑者但四百六十餘人也”;廖燕《二十七松堂文集》卷一《明太祖論》:“明太祖以制義取士,與秦焚書之術無異,特明巧而秦拙耳,其欲愚天下之心一也”;皆為八股文而發,旨則與晁氏之詆“新學”同。明、清之交,言之者實繁有徒,如曾異撰《紡授堂詩集》卷二《癸酉春送周子立北上》又卷三《讀兩生藝》、李世熊《寒支初集》卷二《沙縣[教]諭謝魯[生]先生膺薦序》、曾燦《六松堂文集》卷一二《魏叔子文集序》、粱份《懷葛堂集》卷三《送孫效李歸桐城序》、傅山《霜紅龕全集》卷一五《書成弘文後》、黃宗羲《明文授讀》卷三〇傅占衡《吳、陳二子選文糊壁記》、董說《西游補》第四回等。明之亡也,當時盛傳有人公揭紅帖云:“謹具大明江山一座、崇禎夫婦二名,奉申贄敬。通家生文八股頓首拜。”(鄭達《野史無文》卷四引王世德《崇禎遺錄》、呂留良《東莊詩集·倀倀集·真進士歌贈黃九烟》、賀貽孫《水田居存詩》卷二《甲申寫怨》第三首、屈復《弱水集》卷九《春日雜興》第四首、周同谷《霜猿集》第八〇首等);痛心疾首,發為暴謔。清季國弱民貧,苞桑滋懼,勝朝舊話,遂若重提。馮桂芬《校邠廬抗議·改科舉議》記饒廷襄曰:“明祖以時文取士,其事為孔、孟明理載道之事,其術為唐宗‘英雄入彀’之術,其心為始皇焚書坑儒之心”;林則徐舉酒相屬,歎為“奇論!”浸假而“奇論”亦成常談,如黃遵憲《人境廬詩草》卷一《雜感》第四首、王先謙《虛受堂文集》卷一《科舉論》之類,皆與明遺民之論闇合。有激而“論”,無“奇”不有,如元鄭玉《師山文集》自作《序》毒詈韓、柳、歐、蘇“塗天下之耳目,置斯民於無聞見之地;道之不明,文章障之,道之不行,文章尼之”;則八家“古文”之愚民,罪且浮於八股“時文”矣!《圓覺經》云:“有照有覺,俱名障礙”;《陽明傳習錄》卷下云:“食了要消化,若徒蓄積在肚裏,便成痞了。博聞多識,留滯胸中,皆傷食之病也。”夫苟忘本失中,覺照執着而生障,飲食滯結而成病,“文章”以及“明理載道”之事固無不足以自愚愚人。愚民之術亦可使愚民者並自愚也。

        明季持此論最痛切者為趙南星,《味蘗齋文集》卷五《周元合文集序》:“[秦政]徒焚書坑儒,以愚天下之人。……後世師其意而反之,乃使天下之人各受經,習其師說,而取剿襲鄙淺之文。凡稍有才智欲富貴者,皆俯首肄習。命運利者,菽麥不辨,而已服官政。數奇,則日夜唔吚,皓首寒窗,老而後已。故秦以焚書坑儒,愚天下之人,而後世以讀書為儒,愚天下之人,使天下之人漸漬於其中,日以迂腐趢趗,不能為亂,亦不能為治。……千百世而下,……必有痛哭流涕而切齒秦政者,賈生之《論》未盡其罪之萬一也。”
