    《管錐編》左傳正義47昭公元年(一)
         “伍舉知其有備也,請垂櫜而入”;《註》:“示無弓。”按即《國語·齊語》之“弢無弓。”《齊語》又記桓公輕諸侯之幣而重其禮,“諸侯之使,垂櫜而入,稛載而歸”,韋昭註:“‘垂’言空而來,‘橐’、囊也;重而歸,‘稛’絭也”;《晉語》:“故輕致諸侯而重遣之”,韋註:“‘輕’謂垂櫜而入,‘重’謂稛載以歸。”夫均謂空手上門耳,而一指不持兵刃,後世曰“赤手”,一指不攜錢帛,後世曰“白手”,“垂櫜”蓋兼兩義;此又須斷以“詞之始終”者。
             “楚公子圍設服離衛”一節。按叔孫穆子、子皮、子家輩十人指點議論,伯州犁窮於酬對,後世白話小說及院本賓白寫七嘴八舌情景,庶有足嗣響者,如《長生殿》卷一第五折《禊遊》、卷四第一折《彈詞》,《儒林外史》第二回范進中舉、眾人與胡屠戶,《紅樓夢》第一七回,賈寶玉擬聯額、眾清客與賈政,皆其例也。《史記》、《漢書》記言似未辨此。
             子羽謂子皮曰:“齊、衛、陳大夫其不免乎!國子代人憂,子招樂憂,齊子雖憂勿害……皆取憂之道也。憂必及之”;《註》:“國子、齊子當身各無患。”按《左傳》記知言者論祥殃,莫不驗如影響,此獨變例。又《左傳》記夢皆驗,如定公二十六年,樂得曰:“余夢美,必立”;而昭公四年,穆子“召而見之,則所夢也,……遂使為豎,有寵”;《註》:“《傳》言從夢未必吉”,則又變例也。昭公十五年,叔向曰:“王其不終乎!吾聞之,所樂必卒焉,今王樂憂”;二十五年,“飲酒樂,宋公使昭子右坐,語相泣也,樂祁佐,退而告人曰:‘今茲君與叔孫其皆死乎!吾聞之,哀樂而樂哀,皆喪心也’”;《國語·晉語》二舅犯曰:“以喪得國,則必樂喪,樂喪必哀生。”皆可與“子招樂憂”參觀。桓公九年,“享曹太子,初獻,樂奏而歎”,施父曰:“曹太子其有憂乎?非歎所也”;《正義》:“臨樂而歎,是父將死,而兆先見也。”竊謂曹太子或殷憂親病,不能自掩,故公讌失儀;施父之語,祇是此意,孔《疏》逕以凶兆解之,蓋迎合左氏之“巫”耳。“樂憂”、“樂哀”即柏拉圖論雜糅不純之樂趣(原文略)所言“亦甜亦苦”(原文略),如怒亦挾喜、哀亦兼樂;蒙田嘗以蘋果之酸而甘者(commedes pommes doucement aigres)喻之。蘇軾稱柳宗元《南澗》詩“憂中有樂,樂中有憂”;常語亦曰“痛快”,若示痛與快并。近人區別“雜糅情感”(原文略)為和靜(ruhig)與激厲(prickelnd)二類,一陰柔而一陽剛;“樂憂”、“樂哀”當屬前類也。蓋吾國古人於心性之學說,僅標“六情”、“七情”之目,千載未嘗有所增損(參觀黃式三《儆居集·經說》卷三《七情、六情說》);而其於心性之體會,致曲鉤幽,談言微中,經、史、子、集、小說、戲曲中歷歷可徵,斷非《禮記》之《禮運》、《中庸》或《白虎通》之《性情》所能包舉。《左傳》言“樂憂”、“樂哀”,即已拈出雜糅情感;《太平御覽》卷二五五引《桓氏家傳》載桓範謝表云:“喜於復見選擢,慚於不堪所職,悲於戀慕闕廷;三者交集,不知所裁”,又自省之古例焉。培根早謂研求情感(affections),不可忽詩歌小說,蓋此類作者於斯事省察最精密(the poets and writers of histories are the best doctors of this knowledge);康德《人性學》亦以劇本與小說(原文略)為佐證(Hilfsmittel);近世心析學及存在主義論師尤昌言詩人小說家等神解妙悟,遠在心理學專家之先。持之不為無故。如《三國志·魏書·武帝紀》裴註引《九州春秋》:“時王欲還,出令曰:‘雞肋’”,祇是曹操欲班師而出以隱語耳;而《三國演義》第七十二回:“操見碗中有雞肋,因而有感於懷。正沉吟間,夏侯惇入帳稟請夜間口號,操隨口曰:‘雞肋!雞肋!’”則操不自覺而流露“肺腑”之隱衷,心析學所謂“失口”(Versprechen)之佳例。又如《水滸》第二五回:“原來這婦人往常時只是罵武大,百般的欺負他,近來[與西門慶私通]自知無禮,只當窩盤他”;婦初未知武大已聞鄆哥之發其“勾搭”,而自覺虧心,乃稍減悍潑,心析學所謂“反作用形成”(reaction formation)之佳例矣。參觀《毛詩》卷論《伯兮》、《列子》卷論《周穆王》及《楊朱》篇。

        “窩盤”亦作“窩伴”,《警世通言》第二四卷《玉堂春落難逢夫》:“沈洪……安頓了蘇三,自己卻去窩伴皮氏。”今吾鄉等地口語尚云然。

    《管錐編》左傳正義48昭公元年(二)
              醫和曰:“疾不可為也。是為近女室,疾如蠱,非鬼非食,惑以喪志。”按黃生《義府》卷上釋此節最確,其謂當於“女”字斷句,四字成句,二句為韻,《經義述聞·左傳》下記王念孫語暗與之合,而遠在其後。
