    錢鍾書先生-《管錐編》左傳正義39襄公二十三年

              “臧孫曰:‘季孫之愛我,疾疢也。孟孫之惡我,藥石也。美疢不如惡石:夫石猶生我,疢之美,其毒滋多。孟孫死,吾亡無日矣!”“疾疢”何以曰“美”,註疏無說。《呂氏春秋·達鬱》篇:“趙簡子曰:‘厥也愛我,鐸也不愛我’”;高誘註引《左傳》此節作“疾疹也”,較易解會。“美”、“惡”均指形貌,“惡石”之“惡”乃謂醜惡,即昭公二十八年“鬷蔑惡”之“惡”,非謂善惡之惡。皮疹紅腫,倘不顧病痛,僅論表狀,則色鮮肌豐,稱“美”亦可。文藝復興時意大利人談藝謂或贊騎士之雄猛,則稱其所斫之傷痕曰“美”(belle ferite),或贊僧侶之堅忍,則稱其創口及骨節錯脫曰“美”(belle scorticature e slogature)。十九世紀英人談藝,亦謂醫生於疾患之徵象備具者,輒稱為“美”,故曰“一個美麗的爛瘡”(a beautiful ulcer)。近世蕭伯納至言,病人所謂“慘痛”(ghastly)之開刀,正外科醫生所謂“美麗之手術”(beautiful operations),亦如情人稱所歡曰“美”,而傍觀者則覺其了不動人(unattractive)。“美疢”之說,已導夫先路,庶幾能以冷眼看熱病,如所謂“保持心理距離”(psychical distance)者歟。
             《全唐文》卷五八六柳宗元《敵戒》:“皆知敵之仇,而不知為益之尤;皆知敵之害,而不知為益之大”,即引孟孫語及秦始皇事為例。用意正同《左傳》成公十六年,范文子曰:“自非聖人,外寧必有內憂,盍釋楚以為外懼乎?”《國語·晉語》六記范文子語更詳盡。《孟子·告子》:“無敵國外患者,國恒亡,然後知生於憂患,死於安樂也”;《春秋繁露·竹林》申言曰:“深本頃公之所以大辱身、幾亡國、為天下笑,其端乃從懾魯勝衛起”,與柳文舉秦始皇事甚合。陸游《劍南詩稿》卷八三《病起雜言》:“國不可以無災眚,身不可以無疢疾”;楊萬里《誠齋集》卷六九《乙巳論對第一劄子》:“天之於君,厭之者則驕之以嘉祥,愛之者則譴之以變異;絕之者則誤之以強盛,愛之者則懼之以災害”;皆孟孫、孟子等之旨也。參觀《老子》卷論第五八章。雖然,事有貌同而心異者。釋敵以為外懼,固遠識謀國之忠也,養冠挾而自重,則老黠謀身之巧也;柳州言其一而未知其二。吳王夫差矢書射文種(《吳越春秋·夫差內傳》),武涉說韓信(《史記·淮陰侯傳》),臧衍說張勝(《史記·韓信、盧綰傳》),何穆說劉牢之(《晉書·劉牢之傳》),下至汪景祺戒年羹堯(《讀書堂西征隨筆·功臣不可為》),莫不引《文子·上德》所謂兔死狗烹、鳥盡弓藏為喻,即危詞動之,言留敵庶可自全,苟盡敵則己亦隨盡。《南史·賊臣傳》侯景為慕容紹宗所敗,軍潰,收散卒才得八百人,“使謂紹宗曰:‘景若就擒,公復何用?’紹宗乃縱之”;《北史·賀若弼傳》隋文帝曰:“初欲平陳時,弼謂高熲曰:‘陳叔寶可平,不作高鳥盡、良弓藏邪?’”鄭達《野史無文》卷三記左良玉大捷而不肯窮追,曰:“留此殘賊,武官尚可為人;若賊今日平,武臣明日即奴矣!”同是斯理。王建《射虎行》:“惜留猛虎在深山,射殺恐畏終身閒”;范浚《香溪先生文集》卷八《讀王建〈射虎行〉》:“有如邊將圖偷安,遵養時晦容其姦,翻愁努力盡高鳥,良弓掛壁無由彎。”“留虎”、“容奸”,是亦以“敵”為己“益之尤”、“益之大”也。《淮南子·說林訓》記柳下惠見飴,曰:“可以養老”,盜跖見飴,曰:“可以粘牡。”《敵戒》之言,而忠奸異見,惠、跖殊用,於柳州乎何咎焉。
              古希臘文家論仇敵可為己益,舉羅馬滅加太基,一老成人曰:“外無畏忌,則邦國危殆”(Now is our position really dangerous, since we have left for ourselves none to make us either afraid or ashamed),正言“外寧必有內憂”。十六世紀意大利政論家亦謂安樂為人之大敵,其難禦遠過於苦困(原文略)。死于安樂,眚疾有益,尤為出世法慣語。《陰符經》下篇:“恩生於害,害生於恩”,夏元鼎《水調歌頭》:“害裏卻生恩”又“要知害裏卻生恩”,本之;陳師道《後山詩集》卷五《病起》:“災疾資千悟,冤親併一空”;方以智《藥地炮莊》卷二《養生主》引曹大文曰:“竹關題大士曰:‘人只念救苦救難觀世音,何不念救安救樂觀世音?’”又卷三《大宗師》引杖人曰:“貧、病、死是三大恩人”;足以概矣。

        古希臘辯士亦曰:“富貴使人愚昧恣肆,而貧賤使人清明在躬、嗜欲有節”(riches and power are attended and followed by folly, and folly in turn by licence; whereas poverty and lowliness are attended by sobriety and moderation - Isocrates, Areopagitica, v, “Loeb”, II,107)。故富貴致禍而貧賤遠害也。
